For months now, we’ve been teased and tantalized by some of Toyota’s clever viral marketing. Shots of the rear tailgate here, images of the headlight there; but we’ve never been treated to the entire pie, so to speak.
And now, here it is: the 2016 Tacoma, on full display and looking like the refresh the nameplate deserves. Chiseled and refined to an extreme degree, the new pickup comes after the more than 10 years that the second generation has been around.
The thing is, the more we look at this midsize, the more it starts to take on the appearance of its bigger brother, the Tundra. Certainly, many of the same aesthetic cues are here: a larger grille; a notched front bumper for better airflow; and let’s not forget the stamped insignia laying across the tailgate, broadcasting to the world at large that this is indeed a “TACOMA.”
Under the cool blue skin of this and all other 2016 Tacos, we know that the frame and interior are totally revamped. The latter of these features was a sore spot for many fans of the truck, seeing as Toyota refused to keep up with the times as better materials were finding their way into half-ton and three-quarter-ton models.
Noticeable differences are most easily found in the front and rear of the truck.
The “V6” badge lets us know that a trusty six-pot mill will be found on the new Tacoma, but it’s unknown at this time if it will be the 1GR-FE from its second-generation predecessor. Toyota’s chief truck engineer Mike Sweers has reportedly stated that the updates made to the Tacoma are substantial, and more so than what was done to the latest generation of Tundra.
So now having seen the outside of this glorious comeback kid, we’ll have to wait and see what updates and upgrades the inside holds. What do you think? Did Toyota knock it out of the park on the new truck? Or should they go back to the drawing boards post-haste? Give us your opinion in a comment below.
