If you don’t know who Ricky Johnson is or what the Red Bull Frozen Rush is, then we’ll give you a bit of a primer to study up on prior to viewing the extraordinary video above. First, let’s begin with Mr. Johnson. Ricky is a championship-winning motorcycle racer who competed in AMA Motocross and Supercross, and during the 1980s (remember MC Hammer and parachute pants, yeah, that was the 1980s)Â he really rocked it, winning seven AMA national championships.
Maybe he got bored, or like some of the other off-road racers we know, decided having a roll cage around him was not a bad idea. Either way, he switched to off-road racing, and he’s pretty good at it too. He was the TORC Series Pro2 truck champ in 2010. Then in September of 2012, he won the Pro4 world championship race, and later that same day he won the AMSOIL Cup race that puts Pro2 and Pro4 trucks head-to-head against each other, at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway in Crandon, Wisconsin. He has also been racing in SCORE desert races, and the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series.
Ricky also won the 2014 Red Bull Frozen Rush, the first short-course off-road race on snow, held at Sunday River Ski Resort, in Newry, Maine. And that’s what the video above is all about. It’s Ricky Johnson’s point-of-view as captured by GoPro, and it really gives you a sense of what it’s like to run the course in a 900 hp 4×4 Pro4 race truck. Too bad there’s no bouncing, gyration, and flight sensations built into your seat to accompany the visuals–now wouldn’t that be cool. If you’re interested, the event is taking place again, January 8-9, 2015. Check it out if you can!
