We were all paying rapt attention to the Los Angeles International Auto Show last week, and we were the first to break the news about the badass ZR2 concept debuted by Chevrolet. Now that the dust has settled, we’re able to dissect a little bit more about the truck and what it means for truck buyers, GM, and what’s to come in the future.

First is the fact that Chevrolet has finally produced something that aims to look and perform like a real off-roader, straight from the factory. The days of slapping on graphics, a set of mediocre shocks, and a skid plate or two are gone; now, we get a 2.8-liter diesel motor (pumping out 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque), electronic locking front and rear diffs, and restyled body panels that increase entry and departure angles.

In other aspects, the ZR2 shows great potential in the increased track width, built-in front winch, and monotube coilover shocks from King. Wheels and tires are 18-inch customs and meaty 275/65R18 units, respectively.

We’ve yet to know for sure if Chevy will indeed decide to begin production of the ZR2 concept, but in the midst of the Raptor’s absence, the time is definitely ripe for a dedicated off-roading pickup, and the truckmaker has shown it has the vision, drive, and resources to fill the gap. If this is the kind of direction that we can expect the Bowtie to take, then all we can say is: “Full steam ahead!”
