Readers’ Rides: November Edition

LEADART_1_edited-1Good day to you all, and welcome to Readers’ Rides. Putting together your submissions via our Facebook page, messages sent to our email address (offroadxtreme@powerautomedia.com), or just everyday browsing through the classifieds of various internet locales, we’re excited to jump right in and talk about some interesting trucks, Jeeps, and other four-wheelers that deserve their time in the limelight. Buckle in and enjoy!

10735661_930691693611618_1733856040_n2-High: Lawrence Senning’s 1977 K10

10736171_930691700278284_1263780264_nHailing from Arizona, this big, beefy Chevy is the pride and joy of Lawrence Sennings. He’s owned the vehicle for nearly 25 years, and maintains it to this day with a level of care and love that all of us can appreciate, no matter where our truckmaker allegiances may lie.

“I’ve done a ton of modifications to it,” said Sennings. “The rear end is a custom-built Dana 60, while the front end is a Dana 44 from Pro Comp. Both have 4.56 gearing, and use six-lug axles and one-ton truck driveshafts to get the job done.”

Riding on six-inches of lift from Superlift, the truck is able to squeeze in four excellent 35-inch TSL Thornbirds for snow and mud traction that delivers every time. Last but not least, the heart of the beast is a stroked 383 V8 sourced from a 1989 Corvette, making 440 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque to a Turbo 350 transmission.

CarloMaederer'sYJ_34-Low: Carlo Maederer’s 1990 YJ Wrangler

Ah, the YJ–the square-headlamped Jeep that first debuted in 1987 was almost immediately disavowed and shamed by the Jeep community, but the hate began to subside once the true capabilities of the platform came to light. Maederer, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, became a recent convert to the fold when he purchased his two-tone model in March of this year, and he’s never looked back with regret.

“Other than the odd trip to my friend’s 11-acre plot, the Jeep hasn’t seen a whole lot of use just yet,” said Maederer. “After I get some new tires and changes made to the drivetrain, I can see myself and my wife heading up to Crivitz, then down to the Indiana Badlands, and eventually over to Moab, Utah.”

As it stands, the Jeep currently has seven total inches of lift, as well as its fair share of protection in quarter-inch steel plate body armor and 1.5-inch steel tubing. Maederer’s plans will have the Jeep see new 37- or 38-inch Nitto Mud Grapplers, a rear tire carrier, a custom winch plate, slip yoke eliminator kit, and front and rear lockers.

JoelSwansen'sXJ_14-High: Joel Swanson’s 1988 Cherokee

JoelSwansen'sXJ_2Not a lot of people have the guts to do something as drastic to an XJ as what Joel Swanson did. The man had a vision–to transform his XJ into a Humvee–and went about modifying the SUV with dispatch.

To that end, Swanson chopped the rear section of the roof out and added a roll cage, as well as installed a custom snorkel system. Taking his cut-off wheel to the rear section of the Jeep, the man removed the roof and took care of the reduced structural rigidity by adding in a roll cage.

JoelSwansen'sXJ_3“I also moved the alternator to the top of the motor, and will soon weld the rear axle up too,” said Swanson. “She does everything I need her to do and I never feel bad taking a cut-off wheel to her. She’s my little ‘Slumvee,’ as I call her.”

There’s no word on whether or not the Slumvee will be receiving run-flat tires or a .50 caliber gun turret in the near future, but we can’t count Swanson out in the meantime–he’s really taken this Cherokee to a whole different level, one that we’d like to see more of.

If you or someone you know has a really bitchin’ truck, Jeep, or SUV that you would like to be featured here on Off Road Xtreme, then what are you waiting for?
