With the SVT Raptor on hiatus until further notice, the off-road enthusiast in every prospective 2015 F-150 buyer out there is screaming and begging for a worthy Blue Oval half-ton to hold them over. We’re not sure how well the next one will live up to its name, but we do know this: the folks at Addictive Desert Designs (ADD) did a kick-ass job turning this 2.7L EcoBoost F-150 into a worthy contender with their Baja XT kit.
Resting aside other well-built machines like the offerings from A.R.E. Accessories and Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s specialized drift truck, the ADD model looked every bit the part of an off-road monster we were hoping to find at the 2014 SEMA Show. Greg Foutz, general manager at ADD, was able to give us the skinny on the vehicle.
“Right at the outset, this was going to be a pretty intense build,” said Foutz. “Ford gave us just 60 days to do the build, but offset some of our stress with early release CAD data that helped with the design time. We were able to have our suspension setup done completely through the computer by the time the truck rolled in.”
Foutz continued, “I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish in such a short time. We had to add seven or more inches to the width of the suspension system, while increasing the body width as well to compensate.”
With cooperation from Ford and connections to some of the best in the business, the build proceeded smoothly with Foutz at the forefront. For the powertrain, everything was left bone stock but the exhaust, which was fitted with a Magnaflow stainless steel system.
The chassis was pieced together to include front three-inch internal bypass coilovers and rear four-tube bypass shock absorbers from FOX Racing, with 2.5-inch bump stops too. ADD swapped out the factory control arms and swapped in its own “race” upper and lower control arms, replacement spindles, and rear bump stop kit, as well as a billet aluminum tie rod kit and rear frame gusset kit.
Elsewhere, Deaver Springs came up with a custom pack of springs to add two inches of lift, while Currie Enterprises supplied a state-of-the-art F9 heavy duty nine-inch center rear axle assembly and full-floating hubs. Brakes came courtesy of Alcon, affixing six-piston calipers to the front and four-piston calipers to the rear.
The F-150’s overall aesthetics were striking as well, sealing the deal on this truck’s aggressive yet appealing looks. Here, ADD gave the pickup a Satin Pearl White wrap and Baja XTR splash graphics, while retrofitted Raptor projector headlights offered higher forward visibility. Wide body front fenders and wide body rear bedsides, rock slider side steps, a Venom rear bumper, a Stealth radius front bumper, and “race” chase rack were also installed.
External lighting elements were provided by Rigid Industries. These included a “Capture” radius LED light bar and left-right integrated 10-inch light bars for the front bumper, diffused dually lights for the rear bumper, and a slick 50-inch light bar installed into the chase rack.
All that was left was rigging the truck with the right footwear. For this phase, the ADD team sprang for a set of four 17-inch KMC XD126 Machete wheels, wrapped in mean, malicious 37-inch Red Label Grabbers from General Tire.
It was a testament to the level of work and dedication that Addictive Desert Designs brought that in just over eight weeks, they were able to transform this bone-stock F-150 to the badass that it is today. “The truck came out awesome,” said Foutz. “I was able to drive it for the first time right after [the show] for a photo shoot, and I was stunned and amazed at how well it handles, even with the large 37-inch tires we installed.”
We’re going to give credit where credit is due here and say that Addictive Desert Designs did a fantastic job with this F-150. It’s not a Ford-branded honest-to-goodness Raptor, but it more than holds us over until the next one arrives.
