You could call the Jeep market hot right now. Over the past few years, more and more companies are offering more products and consumers are buying them. The JK is an excellent platform to modify and accessorize. We are always on the lookout to find what the latest cool product is in this arena.
During this year’s SEMA Show, we couldn’t help but wonder what was causing the huge traffic jam in the aisle ways around the Road Armor booth. As soon as we got a clear look, we completely understood. They had one of the coolest themed JK’s that we have seen at the show so far.
Their Special Forces theme was extremely apparent and we had to stop by and find out more. When we caught up to Travis Kirkman (Engineer and Designer for Road Armor) he explained that they are working with the Green Beret Foundation. After a few automotive shows (like the SEMA Show) they are going to let the Green Beret Foundation use the vehicle for a year to promote the foundation.
One of the reasons they opted to build a JK for this project is that they are re-releasing all of their JK equipment. From Road Armor’s perspective, it appears that consumers are once again looking for high quality durable products that won’t fail or deteriorate. We asked Kirkman to walk us around the JK and explain what all has been done.
Up front the winch is bolted to a stubby bumper with stinger guard. The bumper was completely redesigned for better fitment and increased function.
Just behind the front bumper is the upgraded full replacement front fender. Not only is it very solid, but because they reuse the factory blinker, antenna mount and mounting hose, most people don’t think it is an upgraded fender.
Behind the fenders are the rock guards. Road Armor extend their rock guards all the way down to the body seam. This lets them use less nut inserts and provides a little extra protection. “These are the fastest and easiest to install in the industry,” said Kirkman.
After the rock guards are the rear quarter panel. The rear quarter is pretty slick. Road Armor designed a backing plate that can be slid behind the body panel so no thread inserts are needed. This is not only much stronger, but makes installation much easier. Their system also, allows for the factory license plate to be positioned in the same spot.
In the back, is a full length rear bumper with their new tire carrier. Road Armor understands the issues with large heavy ties mounted on tire rack’s. So, they designed their hinge to be able to support the weight without sagging. The hinge has adjustments so you can set the right amount of preload. In addition to the trick hinge setup, they have an extremely sturdy latch that prevents the carrier from vibrating or bouncing around while you are driving.
This is certainly a killer looking JK and with the full complement of Road Armor upgrades, this is one durable platform for the Green Beret’s to have fun in.
