Ah, the Baja 1000: the world’s toughest race across the forbidding and ever-changing terrain of Baja California is due to enter its 47th anniversary this year, taking place November 12-16. At this point in the timeline, the prerunning is over and everyone is getting ready with making preparations to embark below the border.
Toyota is throwing in its lot with the specially prepared 2015 Tundra, led by the legendary “Ironman” Ivan Stewart and driven by the likes of TRD engineer and SCORE champion Ted Moncure, Guinness World Record holder Andy Bell, X-Games winner Jamie Bestwick, and racing legend Ryan Millen. But that’s not all the badassery that Toyota will bring to the event.
Serving as chase vehicles for the TRD team will be, you guessed it, the rough-and-tumble TRD Pro vehicles that have made waves in the off road community for the past few months. Prepared and shaped by the experts at N-Fab, these vehicles have been given all the modifications needed to survive the harsh, unforgiving Baja landscape. From gas cans to tires to long-range radios, the support team should have all they need to help carry the racers to victory.
“With over 1,000 miles of harsh terrain, the Baja 1000 is the ultimate proving grounds for research and development; it helps us to continuously improve our trucks,” said Mike Sweers, chief engineer of Toyota Pickup Trucks. “This race will not only test the race truck, but the three chase trucks as well. All of the trucks have to be up to the task in order to finish this tough race.”
All three of these support vehicles–4Runner, Tundra, and Tacoma–will be on display alongside the red, white, and black-liveried Class 8000 Tundra at the rapidly approaching 2014 SEMA Show. Stay tuned here at Off Road Xtreme as we’ll be swinging by the booth to shoot pics and find out more about these epic trucks.
