Top Three SEMA Predictions – Where is the Off Road Industry Headed?

With only one week until the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV, countless manufacturers, builders, and media outlets are burning the midnight oil in preparation for what is the industry’s largest trade show of the year. While there are thousands of secrets held behind closed doors that will be revealed next week, we wanted to take a look at what we already know heading into the show and make three predictions about what we are going to see next week.

f1252015 Ford F150: Due to the success that Ford’s F150 has had over the past 30 years and being America’s top-selling pickup truck, when there are changes made to the platform, it is sure to make waves throughout the industry. Ford recently introduced their 2015 F150 that is completely redesigned, offers four power plant options (two new and two returning), and is going to be made of aluminum – which was a real shock to the industry.  To make the F150 craze even stronger, the off road specific F150 Raptor is ceasing production and will not be offered in the 2015 body style.

With the immense void of off road focused F150s created by the lack of a 2015 Raptor, we anticipate there will be many 2015 F150s on display made to look like Raptors. From off road tires to long travel suspensions and off road lights, there is sure to be numerous trucks paying their respect to the outgoing Raptor.

rockerWrangler Unlimited: Since the introduction of the four door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, it has taken the industry by storm. There have been over 100 Jeep Wranglers on display at SEMA each year since 2011, much of which were the four door Unlimited body style. We expect this trend to continue as there is even more aftermarket support for the Wrangler this year and even more hype about custom built Wranglers – much of which is focused on the Unlimited. A new trend we are seeing more and more of is tire sizes north of 37-inches on daily driven Wranglers – a trend that we fully support and hope to see a lot of next week.

Toyota TRD Pro: With the 2015 model year already arriving at dealerships, Toyota made a big push toward the upper-end off road market (partly because of the outgoing Raptor?) with their new “TRD Pro” package available on the 2015 Tundra, 4Runner, and Tacoma.

The TRD Pro package varies slightly between the three vehicles, but they nearly all have modifications made to their appearance, suspension, wheels, and tires that brand them as being part of the “Pro” family. Since the TRD Pro package is available on three different models offered by Toyota, that equates to three different “blank canvases” available to the aftermarket for cutting edge project vehicles. What will the aftermarket customizing Gods be able to do with three strong platforms to build off of?

With all the new project vehicles available for 2015, only time will tell what the aftermarket is able to come up with for this year’s SEMA Show.
