They say a new dog can’t learn new tricks, but the G-Wagen’s 45-year-old design still continues to impress every time MB gives the boxy SUV a fresh update. Mercedes-Benz is cranking up the hype-meter to untold heights this week, as the news just came through that the automaker’s polarizing SUV, the Geländewagen (or G-Wagen), is going to dump the twin-turbo 5.5L V8 in favor of a beefier twin-turbo 6.0L V12.
This twelve-pot beast is actually the same one found in the deadly, sleek S65 and SL65 full-size cars, both AMG creations that have been leaving drivers speechless since 2012. So wave bye-bye to any rational semblance of miles-per-gallon output, and say hello to monstrous power–in this case, 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.
Adding four more cylinders to the mix enhances the horsepower by 68 ponies, and torque by 177 pound-feet. Factoring in the G-Wagen’s already bulky curb weight of 5,690 pounds, this nets a power-to-weight ratio of .106, giving it plenty of heft when push comes to shove. It definitely helps push the rig to its top speed of 143 miles per hour.
Buyers may balk when they see the price, however–$250,000 and above. That’s an increase of over $100,000 from the V8-powered G63 that’s currently available, which sits at a more affordable price range at around $135,000. Deciding if the meager power gains and status symbolizing are worth that extra $115,000 will be the work of retirees, mobsters, and drug lords.
In any case, Mercedes-Benz has left us with a lot of time to conduct pro-con analyses, since the G65 won’t be gallivanting around America until 2016. What do you think? Should we continue to hold out hope on a second-generation G-Wagen? Or is this hopped-up luxobarge wearing out its welcome already? Drop down below to leave a comment.
