GM Celebrates 90 Years of the Milford Proving Ground This Fall

With Chevrolet celebrating their centennial anniversary just a couple years back, the company is celebrating another landmark this fall. That’s because in October, GM’s Milford Proving Ground will be celebrating 90 years of testing the safety of GM vehicles. Check out a rare look back at what the Proving Ground started out like and how far it has come in the last nine decades in the video above.

The Milford Proving Ground was opened in the small village outside of Detroit called Milford in October of 1924. Selected for its hilly terrain and distance from more populated areas, Milford proved to be a place meant to make history.

In the early days of the proving grounds, roads were dirt paths etched into the hillside and rollover tests were performed by physically rolling a car down a hill and observing what happened to it.

Now, things are a bit more modernized, with some of the very latest technology being used in the very same place that safety testing started for GM 90 years ago this fall.

Since opening, the Milford Proving Grounds have brought about many industry-leading advances to the forefront, like the Hybrid III crash test dummy that was developed by GM in the 1980s and has since become widely used throughout the automotive world. GM also opened the first rollover testing facility in the industry in 2006.

And since, things like front center airbags, the new for 2014 belt assurance system, which will debut on a select number of fleet vehicles starting in the fourth quarter of this year, and the patent-pending child restraint seat cushion extension feature, which is set to debut in the 2015 Chevy Colorado and the GMC Canyon were developed and tested at Milford.

Throughout the years, GM has put a priority on safety testing their vehicles and the Milford Proving Ground is the center of that. We wish the Milford Proving Ground a happy upcoming 90th anniversary!
