Just about everyone who drives a vehicle has come out to their vehicle at some point and found some scratch, dent or otherwise frustrating blemish that just makes your skin crawl. We spend tons of time paying for, planning and working to mold our vehicles into exactly what we want. An unwarranted scar just plain sucks. Even for those who are proud of every dent in their crawler, what good is a dent or scratch that you don’t have some awesome story to tell?
After a run in with a wayward deer near the end of Spring this year, Jason Phillips of Fredericksburg, Virginia, decided that the dent repair of the driver-side front fender on his Dodge Dakota was going to cost more than the truck was worth. Instead of tossing away the nearly good running daily driver, Phillips decided to conduct a social experiment. He spent a little time and banged out the dent as best he could, sanded the truck down and coated it in chalkboard paint with a roller.
The end result was a driving billboard that constantly changed with the rain. In big bold letters, Phillips writes “DRAW ON ME” to grab people’s attention. He leaves out various colors of chalk and goes on with his day, wherever he goes, to let people decide on their own if they’ll break from their comfort level and make their mark on the truck. Surprisingly, no one has left anything inappropriate on the truck. Kids love to doodle and adults tend to leave inspirational quotes.
Phillips is even considering if and when the Dakota gives up the fight, to paint his next vehicle with the same treatment. For more pictures, head over to Jason Phillips’ Flikr page.
