Installing headlights on the 09-18 Dodge Ram 1500 isn’t difficult, but hidden parts can hang you up. AnzoUSA shines the way with its plank-style projectors. In this article, we watch AnzoUSA’s Director of New Products, Shaun Callaway, install a set of plank-style projector headlights on to a 2009-18 Dodge Ram 1500.
The first step is to remove the plastic cowl that helps direct air into the radiator, just above the grille. They are held on with a set of body clips that can be easily removed using a forked body panel tool. Callaway provides a quick tip – slipping the tool under the cowl and pulling up keeps the clip inside the cowl. This helps prevent you from losing them while working on the rest of the truck.
Next is the grille, which is held in by bolts and clips. The top uses four 10mm bolts that you must remove first. Grab the grille on each side and pull until you hear a “pop.” Do one side at a time and it will come out.
Callaway works through the wheel well to reach a clip that lets the headlight come out.
Next, you’ll remove a pair of 10mm bolts on the headlights. However, you also have other clips you must remove before it will come out. One of those clips you need to work with is in the front wheel well. To reach it, you’ll need to remove an access panel that’s just in front of the front tire. What you’re looking for is a clip that you push up to release the headlight on each side. From there, you rock the headlight until it pops out to remove it. You’ll then want to remove each connector for the headlight and running/signal lights.
Before you install your new plank projectors, you’ll need to find a way to connect the green and black loose wires on the new headlights to the running lights. Shaun uses a pair of Scotchloks, but you can use butt connectors or strip and solder them to the running light wiring.
Callaway adjusts the new AnzoUSA headlights, and then the job is complete.
Once that’s done, test the lights to make sure your connections are working. You’ll also need to adjust the lights with the rear hole in the fender with a Phillips head screwdriver. If everything checks out, reinstall the grille and cowl and your new headlights are ready to light the way. Be sure to check out more lighting products from AnzoUSA to match your new plank projectors.
