It is that time of the year again were there is dust in the air and high horsepower vehicles are tearing up the Baja peninsula. The 2016 SCORE International season starts February 24th for the 30th running of the San Felipe 250.
San Felipe is a quaint Mexican fishing village located on the Sea of Cortez side of Baja California roughly 125 miles south of the US Border at Calexico, California. This race is the youngest of the three traditional SCORE Baja races and sometimes is referred to as the SCORE ‘baby Baja’. Racing will be held over a rugged 249.5-mile course that includes four of Baja’s infamous washes.
The SCORE San Felipe 250 expects more than 150 entries from 20 US states and seven countries which will compete in Pro and Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads. The starting grid includes 15 entries in SCORE Trophy Truck, the marquee racing division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks, 19 in Class 10, 18 in the unlimited Class 1 and 13 in Trophy Truck Spec which could expand as registration is open until February 26th at 5 pm.
The race is considered by most to be an all out sprint as the top drivers are estimated to finish in around five hours. Drivers such as BJ Baldwin, Cameron Steele, Gus Vildosola Jr., Carlos Lopez, and Justin Matney will be participating in the race that starts at 9 am. Last years winner Gus Vildosola Jr. and series winner Carlos Lopez both look to get the season started on the right foot.
