Silver Sport Transmissions (SST) is giving classic truck and SUV owners a reason to celebrate. This is because SST has just launched its latest transmission – the A41X. It’s designed to work with Mopar and GM 4x4s of yesteryear, replacing old TorqueFlite, PowerFlite, Hydramatic, Turbomatic, TH400 and other gearboxes.
It’s no secret that age is the enemy of everything. Over so many years, a transmission can suffer from overheating, clogged valve bodies, slipping bands, and other issues. Taking a refreshed or swapped engine and mating it to that old tranny opens up a can of worms you’re better off avoiding.
To get a better sense of the new transmission, we spoke with SST’s vice president of sales and marketing, Jeff Kauffman. “We packed a lot of benefits into the A41X,” he said. “First and foremost, the A41X has overdrive. Just like with classic muscle cars, ’60s and ’70s 4x4s lack that extra gear for highway driving. So We made sure to take care of that by having a .7o:1 overdrive that allows for higher speeds.”
The A41X is available in three power stages – 450, 550, and 650 lb-ft of torque. It also works with any traditional GM or Mopar engine, ranging from small-block to big-block to LS, LT, or Gen III Hemis. "It's perfect for retrofits," commented Kauffman.
More than just having overdrive, however, the A41X features electronic control, ease of service, and effective packaging. “Electronic control comes in the form of our Compushift controller, which lets drivers fine-tune shifting,” said Kauffman. “A driver can adjust shift points and firmness to his delight. Our transmission is also based around the GM 4L60E/4L65E, so repairs and maintenance are plentiful across the country. Finally, the A41X is compact and fits in tighter tunnels. It goes in easier than, say, a Mopar 518, for example.”
