The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has long been one of the coolest and toughest European off-road trucks out there. A powerful V8 engine, strong frame, solid axles, and all the luxury of a Mercedes-Benz have made it pretty popular. When Mercedes showed off the G500 4×4² concept, the world absolutely loved it. It was the kind of vehicle that automotive enthusiasts dream up all the time, but rarely do those ideas make it all the way to production.
The idea of the G500 4×4² was fairly simple: take a G-Class, put it on military-grade portal axles, give it a big lift and big tires, and add in Mercedes’ 422 hp bi-turbo V8 engine. Those massive portal axles make the G500 4×4² seven feet wide, and with the added lift it becomes nearly eight feet tall. This adds up to an insane 18 inches of ground clearance. For reference, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has 10 inches of ground clearance.
The G500 4×4² has only been available in the US since early 2017 and Mercedes-Benz just announced it will be ending production by the end of 2017. If you want a G500 4×4², Mercedes will be taking orders through the rest of October, but after that, they won’t take any orders. Prices for the G500 4×4² start at around $274,000.
Of course if you still want a crazy Mercedes-Benz off-road truck after October the G63 AMG 6×6 is still available, but still insanely expensive. There’s also the standard G63 and G65 AMG if you’d rather have a street SUV with lots of horsepower.
