Factory off-road packages are all the rage these days. It seems you can’t drive past a dealer lot without spotting at least a dozen rough-and-rugged looking vehicles parked curbside. While the realm of factory off-road vehicles used to be reserved for just four-wheel-drive pickup trucks, it has quickly spread across the spectrum. Ford’s Tremor family is a prime example of this, and the company’s boss, Jim Farley, just tweeted a not-so-subtle teaser. Ford’s off-road lineup is about to get larger with the addition of the Explorer Tremor.
What We Expect From The Ford Explorer Tremor
Ford has followed a relatively consistent game plant when it comes to rolling out new Tremor models. The first among these was the F-150 Tremor, which hit the dirt as a toned-down version of the company’s F-150 Raptor. Due to its popularity, the Tremor package soon spread to the company’s F-250 and F-350 Super Duty lineup, followed by Maverick and Ranger, and finally to Expedition. The closest analog to what is the forthcoming Explorer Tremor is the 2025 Expedition Tremor, which we can glean a great deal of insight from.
Likely Off-Road Hardware For The Explorer Tremor
While the Explorer Tremor likely won’t feature the high-tech Fox Live Valve dampers of Raptor models, it will likely come fit with either performance twin-tube or monotube dampers. We’d greatly prefer the latter. We also expect the Explorer Tremor to offer a small increase in ride height, likely to the tune of about two inches. This small lift is needed to fit the upsized knobby off-road tires that adorn all of Ford’s Tremor models. A robust skidplate package is expected along with aluminum side steps.
On the electronics front, the Explorer Tremor will likely come equipped with the company’s impressive Trail Turn Assist function along with Trail 1-Pedal Drive and a dedicated Rock Crawl drive mode. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist are standard on Expedition Tremor, and we could see the features added to Explorer as well.
The company’s 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine is already available for Explorer ST, and we expect that this 400 horsepower, 415 pound-foot mill will be the sole option for Tremor along with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
From a stylistic perspective, expect the Explorer Tremor to come adorned with orange accents both inside and out, along with unique Tremor badging. A unique grille design is likely along with a lower front fascia that supports orange painted recovery points.
What About The Explorer Timberline?
Those with a keen eye will likely think they’ve seen this before. On the contrary, Ford offered for a short time the Explorer Timberline. The Explorer Timberline was available from 2021 through 2024 with a unique appearance package and tasteful off-road upgrades such as full-length skidplates and a limited-slip rear differential. Like we saw with the Expedition, however, this package was discontinued for 2025.
How Do I Get An Explorer Tremor?
While nothing is official yet, we expect the Ford Explorer Tremor to be fully revealed this summer and go on-sale in the fall as a 2026 model and to carry about a $5,000 premium.
