Every time we go to SEMA, it’s hard not to notice the lights emanating from KC HiLites‘ Central Hall booth. Naturally, we felt compelled to see what all the illumination was about.
Charles VanRooyen, director of sales and marketing, was there to enlighten us about the new lineups available for off-road applications. For the racing types, VanRooyen was pleased to introduce the Flex range of lights, which utilize an innovative design to allow for a great degree of versatility.
The Flexes are essentially light cores that come in an extruded aluminum housing which sits atop a rail. They can be removed from the housing and, thanks to an integrated backplate, be used interchangeably with other housings that can move along the rails to do staggered, paired, singular, or whatever setup you so desire. They shoot light with immense power thanks to a pair of 10W LED bulbs.
For personalization, you can snag these lights with black, blue, red, or yellow backplates and bezels. And at 1,200-1,500 lumens, these lights are indeed bright, and rumor has it that R&D will work on producing a flashlight tool that can be used with the light cores. If you’ve been looking for customizeable lighting, the Flex line is your solution.
Another lineup new to KC is the Gravity range, which is geared toward the regular, non-racing off-roaders, and comes DOT-approved with low-beam and high-beam capability by way of reflector optics. They use two 10W LEDs, and just like Flexes, providing awesome terrain visibility no matter where you go.
Finally, we caught a peek at the new modular light bar available. These things looked way cool, but beyond that, they also addressed a major problem found in recent light bars: the wailing whistle.
Driving through the desert at speed has been known to produce a high-pitched whistling sound through the finned aluminum housing of light bars. To solve this, the backplate on KC’s model blocks air from passing through and vibrating the fins.
