Colorado-based Rossmonster, maker of adventure trucks and custom adventure vans since 2010, debuted a new van in conjunction with the inaugural Overland Expo SoCal event. The folks at Rossmonster call it the Skye; we call it one of the dreamiest vans we’ve seen in a while. Rossmonster touts that the Skye Series is an amalgamation of the most requested features of all its custom van builds, the best-of-the-best, the single van that has it all. Rossmonster goes so far as to call it the perfect build. Unlike its custom van builds, the Skye is a turnkey, ready-to-go adventure van, meaning it’s pre-built and ready for purchase (in early May).
From the Outside
Visually, the Skye by Rossmonster is simply stunning, well balanced and elegantly rugged. It’s built on the long 170-inch-wheelbase high-roof Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, delivering refinement, durability, classiness, and roominess. A super single conversion replaces dual rear wheels with single Owl Van Talon wheels wrapped in off-road tires. Light bars are still popular, so the Skye runs a KC Gravity Titan LED Light Bar. Other exterior additions include Owl Van side steps, a rear ladder, Cloud Cap rooftop pop-top tent with integrated lighting, and a Lippert GG750 electric awning controlled from the Garmin system.
The Interior Layout and Features
The rather traditional layout includes seating for four (swiveling driver and passenger captain’s chairs combined with a bench for two along the driver-side wall), an enclosed bathroom along the driver-side wall opposite a tasteful full kitchen, and a drop-down rear bed. It has a 35-gallon freshwater tank, 23-gallon greywater tank, and a five-gallon Thetford cassette toilet (no black water tank). There’s a fresh water connection for easy filling.
The kitchen, bathroom, and rear sleeping area are nested in non-toxic wool insulation for comfortable four-season off-grid adventuring. Recessed LED lights with dimmer controls and additional lighting zones keep the interior tastefully lit for productivity and relaxation. Occupants are greeted by 11 feet of premium white Corian countertops, light gray walls and ceiling, upholstered custom panels with L-tracks, white oak cabinetry with push-button latches, and sterling oak flooring. These elements keep the interior space bright and inviting. Plenty of storage comes courtesy of abundant passenger-side overhead cabinets.
The kitchen features a Vitrofrigo Slim 150L black double-door refrigerator/freezer, a two-burner induction cooktop, a Breville Combi microwave/air fryer/oven, and a 16- x 20-inch deep sink with a folding faucet (and a cutting board that covers the sink to create additional usable countertop). A unique topographical backsplash screams adventure. The spacious, private vented and heated bathroom provides indoor shower space (there’s an outdoor shower, too) atop an elegant tweak floor. A Queen-size (59×83-inch) murphy bed with a plush five-inch-thick mattress allows occupants to sleep sideways. When not in use, it folds up flush against the driver-side wall.
Powering the Amenities
Power is a big deal when it comes to off-grid adventuring. The Skye has a 1,000Ah (12kWh) Lithium Iron Phosphate battery bank, 3,000W inverter/charger, and 400W solar array. There’s a heavy-duty shore power inlet. A high-amp auxiliary alternator assists in charging at idle. Interior cooling is handled by a 12V air conditioning unit, and there’s hydronic in-floor heating. Customers can opt for a custom Garmin control panel upgrade and a Starlink Mini 12V power port.
The Rossmonster Skye starts at $233,983, which is perfectly in-line with the luxury adventure van market.
