Off-roaders come with many different types of passions ranging from going 100 mph in the desert to going slow on the rocks, but for some using their vehicle to get off the grid is all that’s needed. We spoke with Garvin Wilderness Products to find out what goes into selecting the perfect roof rack for overlanding.

Some of the most common questions that Ron Garvin receives on roof racks are: Can you add a roof top tent our Garvin rack, what is the weight capacity, and what other accessories can we add? All of which are the questions that should be asked when picking out the perfect rack.

Keep the cab of your vehicle open for any type of company with storage on the roof.

For GarvinWilderness they can help you select the rack that suits your needs the best. “We sell a crossbar kit that will adapt most tents to our racks,” Ron explained. “With our kit, the rack is plenty strong to hold the weight a roof top tent.”

Do not plan on putting a tent on the roof, but want to toss extra gear up top make sure the rack can support what you plan to put up top. “Weight capacity is 200-300 pounds, for off-road use and 500-600 pounds static weight depending on vehicle and mounting system,” Ron continued.

Accessories for a roof rack can open up different options on securing gear or creating extra space.

With space as crucial as it is on an overland vehicle, be sure to look at mounts for the side of the rack. “We offer accessories for many different applications,” Ron said. “Such as spare tire mounts, Hi-Lift jack mounts, axe and shovel mounts, light and light bar brackets, wind deflectors, and even Rotopax can mounts.”
