Youth’s Truckbed Flag Causes Controversy In North Carolina

Flag Down 2Flying an American flag has been seen across the country a lot more these days than in times past. It is a way to show your patriotism towards the country, and what better way to show it then flying it in the back of your GMC 4×4 pickup?

A high school student, Peyton Robinson, in York County, South Carolina was asked Wednesday to take down an American Flag that was flying in the back of his truck. The school has finally responded to the incident.

HS was asked to take down his flag

Peyton Robinson (pictured) was asked to take down his flag from the back of his ’90s GMC truck, citing it as a danger to driver visibility.

Thursday morning, several students, parents and local veterans peacefully protested the incident, with many setting up across from the school waving flags. The issue the school had with the flag was that it was due to a safety reason, stating that their policy regarding large flags and how it can be a hazard by blocking another driver’s view.

Thursday afternoon, school officials released a statement via the district website: “Due to the outstanding display of patriotism through peaceful demonstration, it is apparent to us that many are not happy about this policy. School officials have reviewed the standing policy regarding flags and have decided that an exception will be made for the American flag, as long as the size of the flag(s) does not create a driving hazard.”

The district also stated “We appreciate the passion and pride of all who have called or come by YCHS over the past 24 hours. America was founded by Patriots who led positive change in a myriad of ways. We believe today is a great example of peaceful demonstration leading to positive change. This is the very process we advocate in our Social Studies classrooms and the fabric of American citizenship. Thank you for helping us as we educate the students of our community.”

Parents who participated in the demonstration called the decision a win, especially since the school never defined a particular size of flag which would be considered a “driving hazard.”

Gaining interest all over social media and spreading like wildfire, Robinson stated he is “just proud to be an American.” After the incident, Peyton Robinson and everyone across the United States may just be flying their American flag a little higher and prouder.
