Walker “The Legend” Evans is one of the greatest and winning-est off road racers in history. In 35 years of racing he tallied over 142 wins and 21 Champion titles in SCORE, SODA, Mickey Thompson Stadium Series and COORS. He also has an impressive nine Baja 1000 victories to his name.
Like a Cowboy, he rode through the deserts braving the hot sun and bandits. Instead of a horse, his ride of choice was a Dodge truck. His hard driving style as well as his gentleman demeanor won him fans and have inspired countless gearheads to become interested in off road racing and prerunning.
Dave Gengenbach is one of those fans inspired by him and while crawling Craigslist we discovered 1982 Dodge Ramcharger Prerunner that he built as a Walker Evans tribute. Under the hood is a mildly hopped up 360 engine with a Demon Carb and custom headers, bolted to a Granny 4 speed transmission. Out back, a 4.10 rear gear was installed by Driveline Specialties.
To glide through the dunes of the Southern California deserts, the prerunner uses a custom long travel suspension. It was made using FOX Smooth body shocks all around, bump stops, National custom springs and a Dana 44 front axle with high steer. The interior is stripped for racing with Beard suspension racing seats, a racing dash, and a full roll cage.
What makes this Ramcharger an effective tribute is that fact that it uses original Walker Evans Racing fiberglass. The truck is designed to emulate Evans’ own Ramcharger that he ran in off road racing in the 1980’s and using Walker Evans Racing fiberglass makes it a more authentic tribute.
Gengenbach’s Ramcharger Prerunner is an excellent tribute to the legend, it’s not an all-out race truck so nothing is expensive to replace. It’s his pride and joy and would make an excellent weekend warrior for fooling around Pismo and Ocotillo Wells.
