No beneficent uncle, no long-lost treasure map, no winning lottery ticket, no problem–at least, that’s the idea. For best buds Dennis Van de Goor and Scott Paul Edwards, the dream of getting to participate in the incredible experience that is the Baja 1000 is, at the moment, just that; a dream.
However, far from taking it lying down, the boys have decided to take matters into their own hands by starting a donation campaign on Kickstarter. For those unaware, Kickstarter is a site that allows regular people to achieve great things through what’s called “crowdfunding,” meaning that it accepts donations from complete strangers to fund someone’s project, be it a video game, field trip, art project, and so on.
With just over seven weeks to go until the deadline, Van de Goor and Edwards hope to raise just $500 to make it to Mexico (as of this report, they’re at $122). The description for the campaign mentions that the duo’s desire to compete in Baja came from watching the famous 2005 documentary “Dust to Glory.”
For Dennis Van de Goor (left) and Scott Paul Edwards (right), it's Baja or Bust.
As Van de Goor states, “My friend from high school and I are building a Polaris XP-based vehicle to compete in this race. There is no prize money for finishing, just a pat on the back, and of course the glory and experience that comes with the journey. There is something about facing terrible odds that drives us to try and accomplish what most think is impossible.”
Young though they may be, the guys have a vision and the right equipment for the job, as well as plenty of time to make good things happen. Check out more information on the campaign and its inspiration on Kickstarter, and who knows? Maybe you too will be inspired to donate some dough to the cause.
