We’re going to lay out some math for you. Victor Sheppard has, over the last eight years, driven one million miles in his 2007 Toyota Tundra. That averages out to 125,000 miles a year and 343 miles per day at an average speed of 43 MPH. Assuming eight hour work days and very few days off, Sheppard has spent approximately 1.9 years out of the past eight in his Tundra.

We guess you could call him a fan. Toyota, not willing to pass up such an incredible marketing opportunity, is trumpeting Sheppard’s decision to make his next truck a Tundra as well. Toyota swapped out his million-mile truck, which will be dissected and probed for future insight, for an all-new 2016 Tundra, which is more or less the same truck as the one he traded in. That’s the 16th Tundra in a row for Sheppard, by the way.

It’s not as though Sheppard’s truck succumbed to the Ship of Theseus effect either, as this truck is still motivated by its original 4.0-liter V6 engine and transmission. Same paint job too. His job frequently took him from his hometown of Houma, Louisiana, to the far-flung reaches of North Dakota, Wyoming, and West Virginia for his job.

The secret behind the million-mile Tundra may be as simple as routine maintenance, as Sheppard logged 117 dealership visits over the past eight years. He took meticulous care in making sure the oil was changed, timing belts replaced, and service check-ups were met. It also probably helps that much of Sheppard’s driving was done on highways, at highway speeds, where the engine can settle into a low-stress groove as it hums along.

Toyota is going to milk this million mile truck for all its worth, as well they should. All excuses from the domestic fans aside, it’s an impressive feat, and Toyota’s truck engineers deserve a pat on the back.
