If something works, why change it, right? But what if these changes have the potential to make that something greater. Mercedes Benz fans are torn as MB has announced dramatic changes are being made to the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. For the last 35 years the G-Wagon has remained largely unchanged save for subtle exterior changes and power plant upgrades.
The classic G-Wagon and the Ener-G Force concept.
Mercedes states the 2017 Wagon will receive a face lift and it’s body will be widened for greater stability as well as to make room for a new suspension. CarBuzz states they were told by their sources that the influence for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class would come from the Ener-G-Force Concept which debut at the 2012 LA Auto Show. If this is the case, diehard G-Class fans may not be happy about this as the Ener-G-Force concept has a space age look. The source states the interior will also be upgraded with a main goal of making more room for passengers and cargo.
Further interior upgrades will include LED lights, driver assistance and safety features. The power plant is likely to be a a new 3.0L inline-six which will be available in both diesel and gasoline. These sixes are set to produce from 300 to 360 horsepower. These motors will be mated to nine speed automatic transmissions for increased MPG.
Will it be goodbye to those boxy lines, G-Wagon fans have come to love over the last 35 years? Is a dramatic face lift long overdue? Mercedes fans what say you?
