The recent ascension of Pope Francis to Catholicism’s highest office has brought a renewed focus on humility and simplicity to the world’s largest Christian denomination. Francis walks the walk too, driving himself around in either a Ford Focus from the Vatican motor pool, or a 1984 Renault gifted to him by another priest.
Alas, neither vehicle is ideal for viewing the pontiff during his highly-publicized visits and parades to other countries, and according to the Washington Post, Pope Francis has selected a modified Jeep Wrangler to be his chariot of choice for his upcoming U.S. visit.
It will be the second Wrangler modified for the Holy See, as Pope Francis used a similarly-built Wrangler during his recent trip to Ecuador. Francis is scheduled to visit America from September 22nd to the 27th, making stops in Washington D.C., New York, and Philadelphia, and he’s scheduled to address both President Obama and Congress.
Unlike his two predecessors though, Francis will not sequestered from view, but rather will ride in an open-top setup, which makes the Wrangler uniquely perfect for the job.
Francis is committed to reaching out to the world’s poorest people, and he doesn’t think he can do that from behind bulletproof glass. It’s increasingly rare in this world that a person with so much power makes a point to walk amongst the poorest, especially considering he could just as easily be driven around in the comfort and opulence of an oversized Mercedes.
The Wrangler seems like a much better choice for a champion of the people.
