The Land Rover Defender has been a recognized name in off-road capability around the world for over 70 years. For 2020, it is getting a refresh to make sure it is well suited for anything you want to throw at it in the new decade.
The new Defender is respectful of its past but is not harnessed by it,” said Gerry McGovern, Chief Design Officer, Land Rover. “This is a new Defender for a New Age. Its unique personality is accentuated by its distinctive silhouette and optimum proportions, which make it both highly desirable and seriously capable – a visually compelling 4×4 that wears its design and engineering integrity with uncompromised commitment.” The distinctive silhouette is from the Defenders of old with a boxy design and short front and rear overhangs.
When first released, the longer Defender 110 will be available with optional 5+2 seating and four Accessory Packs. A shorter wheelbase Defender 90 will be released soon after. The 2020 Land Rover Defender will be available with two motor options, a 2.0-liter Turbocharged inline-4 producing 300 horsepower and a 3.0-liter inline-6 MHEV that produces 400 horsepower.
“This is our vision of a modern Defender,” said McGovern. “The clean body side contrasts dramatically against the sheer verticality of its front and particularly its rear to create a reassuringly purposeful stance. The overall impression is of an elemental design, yet this clean reductive approach is underpinned by sophisticated surfacing of the highest quality.”
