The 2016 Sand Sports Super Show Gets Desert Season Started Right

REWA021

Every year the change in the seasons signifies a change in the outdoor activities for most in the Southwest United States. The location may not change, but the activities involved do. Boats are stored away, and a different type of trailer is hooked up to the back of the pickup.

The Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa, California every year gets the itch to hit the desert going before anything else. This year’s show took place September 16-18 at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

One of the best parts about the Sand Sports Super Show is the diversity of the vehicles that can be seen at the show. If you are looking for any ideas for your build this is a great spot to get up close and personal with hundreds of rides.

The show has become a staple in the industry to bring out the biggest and baddest desert toys. At the show, you can find anything from the newest UTV to high-dollar sand rails and this year’s show did not disappoint. Even RJ Anderson’s XP1k4 2017 Polaris RZR 1000 Turbo was on display this year.

The event is great for fans and racers alike. Kyle Leduc and Casey Currie chat before the start of the Stadium Super Truck race (left), while Sheldon Creed and Arie Luyendyk Jr. swap racing stories by their trucks.

Walking around the fairgrounds it was evident how much the market has shifted in the sport. When this show first started it was all about dirt bikes and quads, but in recent years it is nearly impossible to find them while walking around.

This is a must for enthusiasts of the power sports market. Manufacturers unveil new products and vehicles built specifically for this show. For the last couple of years both Yamaha and, this year, Can-Am have used this show as an opportunity to showcase their new UTV.

Before the start of the Stadium Super Truck races racing enthusiasts are able to come out on the track and check out all the vehicles and put a hand on there favorite drives truck.

To cap of Friday night and Saturday night of the show, Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks bring high-energy racing to the off-road enthusiasts. The races featured Arctic Cat UTV racing, Class 1400 desert trucks, and the Stadium Super Trucks. This year they even had a UTV open race which was open to any make and model side-by-side.

Our favorite race to watch is the Class 1400. This race features trucks that do not normally do door to door racing on a short-course style track. It is something great for fans to see and for the drivers.

There will always be carnage in off-road racing. A Class 1400 driver ended up on his lid during the race on Saturday.
