When it comes to bucket-list off-road events, Sierra Trek is a must-do. For 2025, there are even more compelling reasons to aim your 4×4 to the event in the Sierra Nevada, north of Truckee, California. Sierra Trek has added new trips to its already impressive lineup, including two “Platinum Level” excursions featuring multi-night overlanding adventures. There’s even a trip that combines both the Rubicon and Fordyce Trails to deliver what could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
What Is Sierra Trek?
Sierra Trek is a 58-year-old event with a basecamp at the cornerstones of Summit City, an 1862 mining town. It’s a family-oriented California Four Wheel Drive Association event geared toward everything from stock 4x4s to fully built rockcrawlers. In addition to a wide range of trail forays, the event offers country-style meals at the chuckwagon, live music, a huge raffle, and beverages at the Summit City Saloon. There’s also a cornhole tournament, vendor show, geocaches, and more. Sierra Trek is traditionally a four-day event, but for 2025, participants can extend their experience with the Platinum Level trips.
Two-Night Overland Trek To Trek
The two-night Overland Trek to Trek trip will be led by Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee Del Albright. He’ll guide a foray into California’s historic Gold Country, sharing the history and lore of the region along the way. Evenings will be spent around the campfire, swapping stories as Del entertains with his six-string guitar and a round of cowboy poetry. This Platinum Level trip is designed for campers who are fully self-reliant, and the run is limited to 10 vehicles.
Rubicon And Fordyce Trails Paired Together In One Trip
The Rubidyce Trek to Trek is a cool new Platinum Level trip that offers the opportunity to run the challenging and historic Rubicon and Fordyce Trails. The route tackles the Rubicon Trail first, with a night in Rubicon Springs along the way. After exiting the Rubicon, the group heads to Cisco Grove to take on the Fordyce Trail. The trip is limited to 10 vehicles, each of which must have a minimum of 35-inch-diameter tires and locking differentials. Additionally, participants must come prepared with spare parts and the ability to self-repair and recover.
Rocklander Trek To Trek Is An Overland Trek
Another new trip is the two-night Rocklander Trek to Trek, which utilizes some of California’s most iconic OHV routes. It’s sponsored by MetalCloak and led by retired U.S. Air Force veteran and former Sierra Trek Chair Bill Ellis. This “true overland trek” is designed for participants who are comfortable being self-reliant for several days in the backcountry. As the route works its way north, participants will encounter lesser-known but special areas of the Sierra. The Rocklander Trek to Trek offers moderately challenging off-road travel and is limited to 10 vehicles.
Overlanding Scenic Run
Additionally, there’s an Overlanding Scenic Run that’s perfect for photographers. This Platinum Level trip is guided by experienced off-roader, parts fabricator, and photographer Cheryl Anderson and assisted by Chris Collard. Collard is an Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee and an off-road world traveler. The route explores the Meadow Lake area, with stops for photo sessions featuring snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes. After dinner at camp, the adventure continues as participants head back out to capture night photography. This trip is also limited to 10 vehicles.
Outer Limits Led By Big Mike Of Marlin Crawler
Furthermore, there’s another new trip on the Sierra Trek docket: the Marlin Crawler Outer Limits Run on Friday, which pays tribute to Marlin Czajkowski of Marlin Crawler fame. It’s led by Big Mike of Marlin Crawler and is said to be ideal for stock or slightly modified 4x4s. The route offers a scenic drive through Gold Country.
