Say what you want, but if you want to get me to buy a car, there’s hardly a better way to tempt me than to do the following: (a) put a lift on the vehicle, (b) install all-terrain tires, and (c) keep the body looking fresh. One seller in Philadelphia has done just that with this soon-to-be-sold four-wheelin’ import.
Now, its name is quite a mouthful: it’s the *gasp* 1989 Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon Turbodiesel Chamonix. Some internet sleuthing indicates that the Chamonix package is geared for wintertime adventure, and comes with thicker carpets and dual batteries. The graphics on the side of the van support this claim, stating that the vehicle is “Specially Designed For All Season Skier.”
Motivating the Delica is a 2.5-liter, inline-four, non-intercooled turbodiesel motor, generating 85 hp and 148 lb-ft. of torque. It’s neither a drag car nor a heavy hauler, but its low-range, three-speed four-wheel-drive can easily suffice to handle most outdoor adventures, and is supported by almost seven inches of ground clearance.
The interior is where this Mitsubishi shines, however. The A/C is still in working order, as is the factory ice maker/cool box, if you can believe that. The carpets and plastic all look to be in great shape, and yes, the middle bench seat pivots and folds as you might expect. There’s even a fun little jumpseat that folds up and out of the way when not in use.
Presently, the Delica reads 115,000 kilometers (71,458 miles) and has had full service to the drivetrain in the past month. It was given a clean bill of health. Bidders are jumping all over this black-and-gold beauty, and the auction will end today at about 1:30 pm PST. What would you pay for this fun little van?
