According to Automotive Engineering, and just about every rumor mill whispering for at least a year or longer, one of the automotive industry’s worst-kept secrets will be announced as fact on January 13 at the 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Michigan.
Ford will finally unveil the 2015 F-150 (which looks a heck of a lot like the Atlas concept that has been circulating around for at least a year), which will be, according to Ford, the world’s first pickup truck featuring an all-aluminum body and cargo box.
It’s said that the 2015 F-150 drops more than 550 pounds, the light-metal body contributing about 450 pounds to the total reduction. It’s reported that Ford will strive to get the base regular-cab 2WD pickup’s highway EPA fuel mileage toward 30 MPG. Current CAFE standards require full-size pickups to average 30.2 mpg by 2025. The Atlas concept truck was obviously the design direction for the 2015 F-150, and included innovative and aerodynamic, fuel-saving devices such as active grille shutters, active wheel shutters, and a deployable front air dam, which are said to be included on the new pickup.
The truck is a big win for Alcoa and Novelis, the two aluminum companies that will supply product. The trucks are said to contain about 1000 pounds of aluminum, including cylinder blocks and heads for new 2.7-L Nano turbocharged V6, the main case for the 6R80 6-speed automatic, and various suspension components. According to Ford, galvanic-corrosion problems between the aluminum front end, cab, cargo box, and the steel frame can be solved using various methods, including special coatings.
