Just in case you thought that perhaps every one except those living in the United States had forgotten what it is like to four-wheel through mud, sand, and rocks, fear not, there is hope. That’s thanks to the efforts of the dedicated organizers behind the European Jeepers Jamboree, held every year in northwestern Europe. This time, its was a point-to-point journey that took the cavalcade of Jeeps and Jeep enthusiasts from Bouillon, Belgium to Sedan, France.

2014 marks the 19th time these enthusiasts have gone on the fun-filled three-day journey, since the event’s founding in 1984. It was actually started by a duo of Dutchmen, Willem van Holten and Jan Sloot, as a way for fellow Europeans to celebrate all things Jeep while trekking through rough country.

Van Holten and Sloot were inspired by the overland expeditions pioneered by the likes of Jeep Jamboree USA, and wanted to offer the same experience for off-roaders in the Old World.

To celebrate this special year, the organizers secured governmental consent to drive special routes that have never been offered to participants before. Oddly enough, all of the off-road sections have to be conducted on private land, since the governments of both Belgium and France have recently forbidden driving through forest and country roads–talk about a buzzkill, you know?

Part and parcel of this is the electronic checkpoint system, which gives each driver and his vehicle an electronic chip card that must be scanned at checkpoints along the way to Sedan. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of opportunity for four-wheeling fun, with prizes, mud trails, barbecues, and clear nights under the stars–all staples of Jeeping adventure.
