Redneck Pools: Harmful To Even The Strongest Of Trucks?

It seems that in every trailer park there is that one truck that’s has been transformed into a party wagon. You know the truck we’re talkin’ about, the one with a tarp in the bed that’s full of water, Dixie girls, cold beers in hand, while Zac Brown plays on the stereo. It’s the redneck pool. While this may look like fun, did you know it may be bad for even the strongest of trucks?

Believe it or not, the suspensions on an F-250, Silverado 2500 and Ram 2500 are not strong enough to hold a bed full of water for long periods. Remember when your 7th grade science teacher taught you that water is heaver than most metals? Well your teacher was right as it’s far heavier than the loads of steal, wood and concrete pickup trucks normally carry.

I’ve got my toes in the water, ass on the bed, not a worry in the world… oh crap, my suspension is dead.

Bed liner manufacturer DualLiner, has done testing to see just how heavy a bed of water is compared to redwood or asphalt. The average truck bed can hold 30-80 cubic feet of cargo. One cubic foot of water weighs 62 pounds compared to one cubic foot of redwood which weighs 28 pounds per cubic foot and asphalt which weighs 45 pounds per cubic foot. They tested 24 late-model pick up trucks ranging from Silverado 2500 to Escalades to Tacomas and discovered that a bed full of water exceeded all but two of the maximum payloads. Add a group of people each weighing 100-200 pounds, and that can destroy your truck’s suspension.

The two trucks that passed the test were the 2014 F-450 dually and 2014 Silverado 3500 dually. Despite it being suspected that filling a truck bed with water will destroy your truck’s suspension, we having a feeling that these folks aren’t stopping this tradition any time soon. So enjoy your ice cold beer, your pool-filled truck and have a good time. Pop quiz: What weighs more, a pound of lead or a pound of water?
