Taking care of a 4×4 is something every off-roader should know how to do. Checking tire pressure and fluid levels, regreasing joints, and cleaning out the cabin are all relatively easy tasks; but we’d be foolish to think that’s all that needs attention in a vehicle, especially older vehicles.
In the case of Jeeps, models like the CJ, Grand Wagoneer, and the J-Series pickup (just to name a few) have all passed through middle age by now. Parts that haven’t been replaced since the AMC era are no doubt prone to failure, so it’s good to know that companies like Powermaster are keeping these rigs running.
Currently, the company makes a multitude of products for Jeeps, all servicing the electrical side of the old 4x4s. Three types of alternators reach as far back as 1966 and as far forward as 1990.
A natural finish alternator covers the 1978-90 CJ series/Wrangler; 1975-77 Cherokee Limited/Comanche/Grand Wagoneer/J-Series Pickup (V6 only); 1978-86 Cherokee Limited/Comanche/Wagoneer Limited; and 1978-91 Grand Wagoneer/J-Series pickup. Customers can have them in either a 100-amp (PN 8002) or 140-amp (PN 47294) version.
Two alternators cover 1966-74 and 1975 (any V8) applications (left) and 1976-77 Jeeps too (right).
The black finish alternators cover the 1966-74 and 1975 (any V8) applications, and once again come in either 100-amp (PN 8-56140) and 140-amp (PN 8-56100) versions. There’s also one for 1976-77 Jeeps with any V8 (PN 8-57140).
Starters are of course a big concern on aging rigs. Powermaster offers a good variety to choose from based on one’s needs ranging from the entry-level, original look replacement starters to the large-and-in-charge XS Torque series. Putting out a compression ratio of up to 18:1, the XS Torque starters take no guff when it comes to getting the engine up and running.
Left to right: for V8 and I6 (except 4.0-liter) starters, Powermaster offers Original Look, XS Torque, Ultra Torque, and Ultra High Speed models.
Powermaster covers all AMC-era models with the V8 and I6 (except 4.0L) in Original Look (PN 3212) XS Torque (PN 9515), Ultra Torque (PN 9415), and Ultra High Speed (PN 9445). 4.0-liter offerings run in XS Torque (PN 9516), Ultra Torque (PN 9416), and Ultra High Speed (PN 9446). Even four-cylinder models from 1986-98 can have the Original Look (PN 3212) and MasterTorque (PN 9633) versions of starters.
Left to right: for 4.0-liter models, Powermaster offers XS Torque, Ultra Torque, and Ultra High Speed starters.
