We all know the phrase “like a well-oiled machine,” suggesting smooth operation without any issues. Where it applies to motor vehicles, that description fits diesels to a “T”, because diesel fuel has lubricating properties for everything from the injectors to the cylinder walls. Keeping your machine well-oiled entails many things, one of which is making sure that no contaminations can get in.
That’s where companies like aFe Power step in with filtration offerings, the latest of which is the Pro-GUARD 7 series. Touting ultimate protection for the diesel market, these filters use seven-layer progressive cotton and synthetic media, yet still manage to provide high-performance flow. We talked with aFe Power’s Paul Hardley to get a better understanding of the Pro-GUARD 7 series. Follow along in the Q&A section below.
What was the goal behind the Pro-GUARD 7 series? How did the product line begin?
Paul Hardley: The goal was to meet a need for a washable and reusable high-protection filter used in diesel work trucks in extremely dusty and dirty environments. Our Pro5R performance media has done great in regular street and highway driving, but harsher environments like construction sites, agriculture, and off-road driving demand greater protection.
How was testing performed on the Pro-GUARD 7 series?
PH: One of our diesel filters (PN 10-10009) was built with different mesh-count cotton gauze layers that matched with different density non-woven synthetic media. This filter was submitted to the Southwest Research Institute for filtration efficiency testing, both SAE J726 Coarse Dust and Fine Dust testing. Various combinations were evaluated until the optimal combination for air flow, dust-holding capacity, and filtration efficiency was achieved.
What makes the air filter media so unique?
PH: It is unique for the “progressive” nature of the media and the combination of cotton gauze with synthetic media. Rather than a constant mesh-count media often used in other washable-reusable performance filters, the Pro-GUARD 7 uses five layers of progressively finer mesh cotton-gauze, backed by two layers of finer density synthetic non-woven media. This progressive arrangement ensures highly efficient filtration even in Fine Dust testing.
How many applications are covered by the Pro-GUARD 7? Which makes?
PH: All diesel applications are covered. We have products for Ford Power Stroke, Dodge Ram Cummins, and GM Duramax diesel trucks.
