Quick Hit: Cooling Down Your Jeep With C&R Racing

There’s the trail – 30 miles long, big rocks, deep ruts, muddy sections, and at the end of it, a grand vista and a barbecue. You’ve done all of the modifications you thought necessary, from suspension to tires to recovery gear, and even brought spares of driveshafts and fuel cans.

Your Wrangler JK is well-equipped to deal with this journey… or so you thought. Part-way into the trail, while attempting to clamber up some rocky steps, you heard a pop and saw white smoke billowing out of the front end. The radiator is kaputt and that’s that.

Whether it's all at once or in a slow leak, the radiator in a JK is no less susceptible to damage than any other OEM radiator.

Whether it’s all at once or in a slow leak, the radiator must be looked after and replaced once it starts to lose its function.

Hopefully, this doesn’t happen to you, and we caught you in time. Here’s where you can take a look at what C&R Racing has to offer you and your rig, and here to help us is Roger Rosebush.

C&R Racing has had tremendous success in both civilian and racing applications, from NASCAR to Indycar, and much of that learning and technology can be found in its offerings for the Wrangler JK. The factors that separate C&R’s products from the stock equipment are threefold: the quality of the radiator core, the amount of square inches of surface area, and the adequacy of water flow in the cooling system.

C&R's replacement radiator for JKs will make sure the vehicle never runs too hot while you're out on the trail.

“Off-roading and rock-crawling can do a number on the cooling system in a Jeep,” said Rosebush. “Twisting and turning puts pressure in different areas, and pressure becomes leakage given enough time, as the core weakens and gives up.”

C&R seeks to cure the problems of overheating with its proven race technology, starting a continuous extruded tube design that spans the entire length of the radiator. This keeps the tubes from expanding during high-heat situations, while still letting the coolant flow freely.

Defining features of the C&R radiator include extruded tubing for better structural integrity during high-pressure situations, and full-length subheaders that make the radiator less prone to twisting or flexing out of shape.

The big thing that off-roaders will like is the reinforced full subheader, which adds rigidity to the radiator and makes it less susceptible to damage. On each of the radiator’s four sides, reinforcing pieces of metal keep the structure from flexing and twisting out of shape, which adds to longevity and continued performance.

It’s thanks to these two features that the C&R radiator can handle 100 psi, dwarfing the 30-40 psi of basic radiators. This makes them perfect for upgrades to higher horsepower and torque, which C&R just so happens to accommodate with versions for LS swaps and 6.4-liter Hemi swaps.

Planning a V8 swap in your JK? C&R has you covered here as well, with compatible radiators ready to take on the extra heat and pressure these motors generate.

“Our parts are pressure-tested and are adaptable to the stock fan, or we can improve it with SPAL fans so the user can deal with higher power output,” said Rosebush. “Higher altitudes put a burden on the cooling system, and at lower speeds without adequate airflow, the engine will overheat. We accounted for those scenarios with our products, and that is what we bring to the customer.”

Take a look for yourself and find out just how C&R can improve the performance of your Jeep. Find more information on C&R’s website, and don’t forget to follow the company on Facebook.
