Having the right tool for the job was something that Dad taught us growing up. On our own, we found that some tools fulfilled double or even triple duty. But few can reach what Body Armor 4×4 just has in the form of its multipurpose Backbone.
Touted as the most versatile trail tool ever, the Backbone is a four-in-one tool that attaches to a two-inch hitch receiver and comes with you wherever you go. Once locked in place with a hitch lock, the Backbone stays out of the way and is ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. Let’s take a look at the four functions the Backbone takes care of.
Starting off, the Backbone can act as a skid plate. With its minimal underhang and down-sloped rear, the tool will protect the rear of your rig as you amble over rocks, logs, and other obstacles. Quarter-inch-thick, heavy-duty steel will absorb the impacts that might otherwise damage the bumper or tailpipe.

While the Backbone is still hitched to the receiver, it can act as a recovery point. Locked into the receiver, a recovery line can be anchored to the Backbone and be the thing that saves your rig, or someone else’s. Safe, effective, and easy to get to, the Backbone is a great tool for this purpose. You can even step on the Backbone to get into the bed, using it as a step.
Finally, with the Backbone free and clear of the 4×4, it can be used as a wheel chock. This is great for trail repairs when things have to stop in a less-than-ideal location, and you want the extra peace of mind knowing the vehicle won’t roll away. Flipped upside down and placed on the ground, the angle of the Backbone’s steel plate can stop a tire from doing what comes naturally.
