OnX Offroad Now Offers Cell Phone Coverage Layers On Its Maps

Off-roading is full of surprises—some good, and some not so great. One of the not-so-great surprises is finding out that the trail you’re exploring doesn’t have cellphone service when you expected it to be awash in coverage. Suddenly, your ability to communicate and summon help, if necessary, disappears. Fortunately, onX Offroad has a new feature that adds cellphone coverage layers to its maps. This allows you to know in advance whether the trail you’ll be on has coverage. Also, since the feature provides real-time network information, it can help you find a location with coverage should you need to communicate with the outside world while on the trail. So, onX Offroad’s new cellphone coverage layers have your back during both the trip planning and on-trail phases of your off-road foray.

The new cellphone coverage layers available in the onX Offroad app provide information on the reach and strength of cellular networks.

Cell Phone Coverage Layers For AT&T, Verizon, And T-Mobile

OnX Offroad’s new cellphone coverage layers show users where mobile broadband and voice coverage from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile begin and end across the U.S. The information is detailed, and the layers provide up-to-date data regarding the reach and strength of cellular networks in a given area. To view the strength of 5G, 4G, and voice coverage, you simply zoom in on the map. This allows you to see where coverage is strong, lacking, or nonexistent. The cellphone coverage layers integrate with onX Offroad’s navigation tools, enabling users to view the coverage maps overlaid on terrain and trail data. If you have a 4×4 with CarPlay and Android Auto, the app will sync with those, too.

The cellphone coverage layers also work with downloaded offline maps, so even if you’re out of cellphone range during your off-road exploration, you’ll be able to access the layers and see where you may have a signal along your route. The layers are easily accessed via the Map Layers menu; you simply toggle the switch for your cellphone carrier.

Activating the cellphone coverage layer feature is as easy as toggling on the carrier of your choice and clicking Done. Conversely, the feature can be left off if not needed.

The Cell Phone Coverage Layers Can Also Help You Unplug

OnX Offroad Senior Product Marketing Manager Andy Zielinski notes that the new cellphone coverage layers can also help you unplug. He says, “Knowing that cellphone service exists gives many off-roaders peace of mind. They can stay in touch with family members, check in at the office, and, if something unexpected happens, they can call for help. On the other hand, intrepid off-roaders can use these new layers to get away from it all and find places to fully unplug. These layers are another way for onX Offroad to provide app users with the most accurate, reliable, and relevant information for their adventure at hand.”

The cellphone coverage layer will overlay the onX Offroad map you’re using. Thus, you’ll be able to see terrain and trail data in addition to cell phone coverage information.

About The OnX Offroad App

The new cellphone coverage layers integrate with the onX Offroad maps. Among many other features, these maps allow you to find off-road trails, and the trails are color-coded by difficulty level so you can explore trails appropriate for your skill level. Additionally, the maps show where you can and cannot drive. There are high-quality aerial maps as well as topographic maps, allowing you to plan your route accurately. OnX Offroad’s Go & Track GPS capabilities enable you to track your trips, including location, distance, speed, and elevation. Furthermore, onX Offroad allows you to add waypoints, attach photos to your waypoints, create routes by adding lines, and share your routes with friends.

OnX Offroad is offered in two versions. The Premium version features trail descriptions with photos and difficulty ratings, as well as offline maps, waypoints, 3D maps, compatibility with CarPlay and Android Auto, and more. The Elite version includes all of the Premium features and adds private and public property boundary information, landowner information, savings on parts and accessories from many partner companies, and more. The new onX Offroad cellphone coverage layers are standard on both the Premium and Elite versions of onX Offroad. OnX Offroad also offers a free seven-day trial of its Elite version.
