Larger tires, more lift, and different gears are usually the first thing on an off-roaders checklist when it comes time to modifying the vehicle. One part of the build that can play a huge part in the way the vehicle runs, and gas mileage is the transmission.

We spoke with Will Vance of TCI Automotive to get the scoop on how to select an off-road transmission. “On a transmission selection, power versus weight versus gear and tire combo is one of the biggest deterring factors. This also applies to the correct converter for the application,” Vance explained about where to start with selecting off-road worthy transmission.

“Now, the actual usage of the vehicle plays a big role as well. Running the vehicle in Baja, the mud drags, or the trails all need to have the transmission setup according,” Vance continued. “We have a complete line of trans ranging from the tried and true tree speed TH350 or 400, to full engine braking overdrive 4l60 or 4l80 series transmissions. We also offer the full manual valve bodies for several transmissions that retain a forward or reverse pattern and retain engine braking as well.”

Having the right transmission is great, but Vance told us that there is a fix that will make any transmission last. “One thing many customers overlook or simply don’t think about is making sure they have the proper cooling system to support the transmission and converter for the given application. Heat is the number one killer of transmissions, and most times it is an avoidable situation where one of our cooler could have been able to keep the heat in check.”
