Chevy pushed all the right buttons when they showed the 2015 Colorado ZR2 off-road concept not long ago. If you were disappointed with the production Z71 and “Trail Boss” packages and lusted for something more hardcore, your ship has come in. Icon Vehicle Dynamics (not to be confused with Jonathon Ward ) has put together an off-road package for the new Colorado/Canyon that gives us the ZR2 that GM won’t.
Icon offers five stages that give the customer the option to incrementally dial in off-road capability and price point. We’ll focus here on the $4,200, big kahuna Stage 5 Colorado/Canyon Suspension System.
The top of the line package gives the truck 2.5-inch coil-over shocks just like the cool concept ZR2. Wheel travel is up by 25-percent over stock and lift height is adjustable from 1.75 to three-inches on a 4WD Crew Cab. Throw in Eibach springs, FK rod ends, tubular uniball supports, fully rebuildable shocks and room for eight-inch wide wheels with 5.25-inches of backspacing and 32×11 tires without cutting the truck’s body and all the boxes are checked.
We think the Colorado/Canyon looks good with a little bit of “Raptor” added to the mix, sacrilegious comparison aside. The Stage 5 package with a big set of tires and wheels like the photo shoot truck would make a nice prerunner mid-size rig minus the $50,000 price tag.
We wonder when or if Chevy will follow suit with its own factory ZR2. Maybe after the newness of their new mid-size truck wears off, they’ll add it as a mid-cycle enhancement. Until then, build your own over at Icon Vehicle Dynamics.
