A team wants to win every race that they participate, but their are only a few races in the world that they want more than anything else, one of those being the Mint 400. The history and legacy behind the race makes it one that every team wants to have up on their mantel.

For Jason Voss this is his fifth time taking on the great american race. He has competed in the Mint 400 in both the Trick Truck class and once with Rick Johnson in the Pro Truck class.

We had the chance to catch up with Voss at contingency on Fremont Street and see what he thinks of this race. “It’s a rough race course it is brutal out there. We have had some bad luck with both mechanical failures and crashes in qualifying. There is a lot of hype around this race and plenty of media covering it. This is where the competition is at, so this is the one to win,” Voss told us as we talked towards tech.

“There is a lot on the line for winning here. We qualified well and will be starting fifth in the race next to Jesse Jones. I will let the people in front of me set the pace and wait to try and get around them on the last lap, or beat them on physical time if I cannot get around them,” Voss explained.

Jason Voss hoped to get on the podium at the 2016 Mint 400, something that he would finally achieve.

Everyone heads out to Vegas to get lucky, whether it be on the tables, slots, or in the dirt. Voss has not hit lucky sevens in Vegas and let us know the issues he had at last years race, “Last year we lost our transmission at race mile three. There was a small assembly issue with it that got overlooked. We were able to get enough oil put back in to limp it to the first pit, but ended up having to swap out transmissions. Even with that set back we finished the race. It seems like we have not had that great of luck out here at the Mint, and we have never won it overall in the Trick Truck class.”

“We won the 2009 Mint in the Pro Truck class,” Voss continued. “The class is not around anymore, but was a great class back in the day. I do not know if we have even broke into the top 10 in Trick Trucks. This has definitely been a bad luck race for us.”

“Going into the race the biggest thing that we need to focus on is the course itself. The course changes every lap with this amount of entries. Our plan is to keep pace and save our equipment for the last lap. Our truck is a great truck, it is a little older and heavier. It is not known to do well in qualifying, but does well in the race,” Voss finished.

The 2016 Mint 400 gave Voss his best finish and made it to the podium. He finished third behind winner Justin Lofton and Andy McMillin in second place. Voss will come back strong next year and continue to be a threat in ever race he starts.
