We say “Lamborghini,” you say–what? Aventador? Huracan? Diablo? Heck, maybe some of you shout out old-school exotics like the Countach and Miura. All of them high-priced, all of them road-going, all of them frightfully fast. And all of them are cars, when looked at categorically.
But the exotic Italian brand was known to try things outside of their comfort zone from time to time. Evidence of that is perhaps seen nowhere better than in this rare SUV, the LM002, otherwise known as the “Rambo Lambo,” which was produced from 1986 to 1993.
As you might imagine, a vehicle like the LM002 found its roots from Lamborghini’s interest in entering into a military contract. The first prototype, the “Cheetah,” was made in 1977 and had a Chrysler-made, rear-mounted V8 as its powerplant. It proved unsatisfactory as an off-roader, however.
After some more trial and error, Lamborghini said “to hell with V8s!” and swapped in a Countach-sourced V12, placing it up front like normal people do. A grand total of 301 were made over the course of those eight years, and only 48 ever made their way to American shores.
V12, manual trans, leather interior, A/C...so crazy yet so cool!
The name, the history, the power, the mileage; it all comes together to attach a high price of $249,000 to this odd yet awesome off-roader from the Old Country. Per the description on Lamborghini Houston, where the LM002 is being sold, the vehicle went through a complete engine overhaul, as well as fitment of a new cat-back exhaust system and a fresh coat of paint.
With a jaw-dropping 77-gallon fuel tank built-in and 450 hp with 369 lb-ft of torque, the LM002 doesn’t seem like it would freeze up when faced with a trail ride or day spent in the dunes. Where would you take this “Rambo Lambo” out for a spin? Tell us in the comments below.
