Leading The Charge: GMC HUMMER EV Undergoes Testing

The 2022 GMC HUMMER EV is rated at 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. It packs a host of off-road features, making GMC refer to it as the “World’s First Electric Super Truck.”

When GMC announced its HUMMER EV would be soon joining the company’s family of purpose-built vehicles, some were understandably skeptical. It was designed and engineered to the handle the roughest and toughest of outdoor and off-road conditions such as GMC Sierra pickup or GMC Yukon SUV. Most of the electric vehicles currently available to the general public wouldn’t stand a chance of surviving the terrain off-roaders regularly navigate, nor do they have the range off-roaders demand.

From everything we’ve seen so far of the GM HUMMER EV, that may not be the case. For example, the HUMMER EV offers a considerable amount of ground clearance and a suspension system capable of a 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tire fitment as standard equipment. For those with greater demands, the HUMMER EV is said to be capable of running 37-inch tires. It’s also available with heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts to maximize articulation and reduce steering feedback during off-roading and hard cornering. E-lockers up front and what GMC refers to as “virtual lockers” in the rear deliver optimum traction capability.

To top that off, its available CrabWalk setting allows the HUMMER EV’s four-wheel steering (the rear wheels can turn as much as 10 degrees) system to help it walk through twisty trails and around obstacles with a confidence unmatched by any other vehicle in its segment. It’s also available with Extract Mode, which allows the vehicle to lift itself approximately six inches from standard ride height.

The 2022 GMC HUMMER EV recently arrived at GM’s Milford Proving Grounds to continue validation tests and will then head to northern Michigan to run through the team’s grueling winter testing process.

Off-road track and trail visibility for the HUMMER EV is enhanced through an available 18-camera underbody system that delivers real-time views. The underbody camera system offers strategic placement for forward and rearward views and is low enough to see beyond the vehicle’s extensive skid plate protection. As to driving range between charges, GMC estimates a 350-plus mile range under certain charging conditions.
