Knowledge Is Power: American Trucks’ EcoBoost F-150 Guide

Trucks have certainly gotten more complicated with time. Efforts to meet emissions laws, emerging technology, and forced induction have all become large factors in this trend. It can really make your head spin sometimes.

Thankfully, American Trucks has stepped up to clarify how it all works, at least as it pertains to the EcoBoost F-150s. Starting in 2011, these trucks have become a common sight on the roads of America. They utilize two turbochargers to force extra air into the V6 engine, and this makes them come fairly comparable to naturally aspirated V8s in terms of horsepower and torque.

The 3.5-liter (left) and 2.7-liter (right) are the current EcoBoost options available on Ford F-150s.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost was the first EcoBoost motor to be sold on an F-150. In its best form, it makes 365 horspower and 420 lb-ft of torque, as the guide shows us. It features direct fuel injection, dual overhead camshafts, and a towing capacity of 12,200 pounds. What’s more, it maintains 90-percent peak torque from 1,700 to 5,000 rpm.

The other EcoBoost engine, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost, is indeed a smaller displacement motor, and that means less output. Yet the little 2.7 can make 325 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque. That gives it the ability to tow up to 8,500 pounds. Not bad for a sub-3.0-liter engine. It’s even got the same metallic makeup as a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel engine, so that helps improve its longevity.

The guide goes on to explain some great ways to squeeze even more power out of these engines, as well as other tips, facts, and figures. We recommend you take a look at it when you get the time and evaluate what you think would make a good fit for your F-150 (or dream F-150, if that’s the case). You can view it online here, and check out more from American Trucks on its website and Facebook page.
