This massive vehicle is the Unicat MXXL 24AH, an off-road-capable 8×8 mobile home loaded with equipment and creature comforts.

We’ve seen quite a few of the European-style off-road camping vehicles at shows such as the Overland Expo, usually held in the Flagstaff, Arizona region in the spring of each year, but a recent report on Gizmag.com from the 2013 Dusseldorf (Germany) Caravan Salon gave us a look into the entire gamut of what’s available on the other side of the Atlantic in the way of off-road vehicles, as well as off-road-worthy campers and RVs. It was eye-popping to say the least.

The 2013 Dusseldorf Caravan Salon (caravans are what they call RVs and campers in Europe, and RVing or camping is referred to as caravaning) was jam-packed with vehicles and trailers of all sizes, shapes and types. And many of them were more than capable of tackling the most rugged off-road terrain you can imagine.

Here in the States, we think of built Jeeps Wranglers, Ford Raptors, tricked-out Land Cruisers and sweet classic Broncos as pretty awesome. But we were impressed by some of the rugged, off-road-capable campers that were on display at this Salon (show). Gizmag.com put together a tour of every off-road model they found, range from pop-up tent trailers with ground clearance to full-blown tactical 8x8s.

The Unicat MXXL 24AH is a massive specialty off-road capable 8×8 mobile home loaded with equipment including a fueling station for other vehicles, satellite phone and central tire inflation system.The MXXL’s interior has teak flooring, and occupants enjoy the benefit of dual auto-tracking satellite TV receivers. The 24 AH also features has a huge hydraulic winch up front, and the vehicle includes a 440-watt solar system and a four-cylinder diesel generator.

When equipped to the right SUV or truck, the 3DOG Camping Roof Tent becomes an off-road camping system. The 3DOG Camping Roof Tent offers a foldable roof top tent system as well as its trailer tents.

The EX 480 is built on a Mercedes Atego 1023 chassis.

The Bimobil EX 480 was also on the floor of the 2013 Dusseldorf Caravan Salon. The EX 480’s rear bed is 57 x 83 inches in size. The EX 480 has a kitchen with 55 x 22 inches of floor space, and a compressor fridge with a freezer compartment.

Although it’s unlikely these motor vehicle’s will be seen in any U.S. dealerships, and it would be hard to imagine grey-marketing them due to emissions standards, it’s still nice to think about roaming about the Mojave Desert or swamping the bogs of Louisiana in that 8×8 Unicat, isn’t it?
