Recently, the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) looked at its armed forces members, their branch of service, and the vehicle they drive. You may be surprised by the list and who was on top, but all five branches of service–Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard–all selected or drive a Ford F-150.
It is no surprise that the Ford F-150 is on the list, as the trend parallels that of the nation’s sales of having the Ford F-Series truck as America’s top selling truck for 38 consecutive years, and a best-selling vehicle for 33 consecutive years.
The list does not break down particular years of the vehicle, but just as a model in general. USAA members also picked the Ford F-150 as the preferred vehicle in 2013. That year was also a great year for the truck, as it also received the “Top Safety Pick” recognition by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Notably, the only other truck to make it on all five lists was the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The Silverado made it as high as number two on the Marine Corps list, number four on the Army list, yet did not even crack the top five on either the Air Force, Navy, or Coast Guard list.
The list of vehicles that were chosen by each branch were not based solely on trucks; in fact, the majority of the vehicles were sedans or CUVs. The only other rigs to make the lists were the Toyota Tacoma and Jeep Wrangler.
Steve Harrison, executive director of Auto Circle at USAA, said: “We advocate that our members take into consideration the total cost of owning their vehicle when purchasing.” With that being said, it will be interesting to see the list as gas prices fluctuate, and vehicles come more fuel efficient.
You can never go wrong with a truck, and you will always need a truck, and the members of USAA show this. The Ford F-150 is a great vehicle platform that will continue to be a top of this list and many more like it for years to come.
