Ten years ago, most automakers offered automatic transmissions with no more than five gear ratios, as fuel economy wasn’t a priority for most car buyers. In the decade since though, a lot has changed, and now automakers are offering six, seven, and even eight-speed automatics in cars across the spectrum. This includes Ford, which will debut an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission on the 2017 F-150 Raptor, along with an improved 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 that will churn out 450 lb-ft of torque.
Although Ford still isn’t revealing official horsepower numbers for the Raptor’s twin-turbo V6, it does discuss the technical improvements to the motor, as well as the advances made in the development of the 10-speed transmission.
The engine features an all-new, Ford-first dual-direct and port fuel-injection system with two injectors per cylinder, one mounted in the intake port where air enters the cylinder and one positioned inside the cylinder. These injectors work together to improve power output, efficiency, and emissions. The EcoBoost engine also features new turbocharges that deliver more boost, and an all-new roller-finger follower valvetrain that sheds 4 pounds compared to the old valvetrain.
According to Ford, the new 10-speed transmission delivers improved acceleration and performance compared with previous six-speed automatic transmissions, thanks to optimized wide-span gear spacing, coupled with drag-reduction actions. Three overdrive gears and a wider ratio span enable lower-numerical rear-axle ratios to help improve fuel efficiency at highway speeds, and Ford made weight savings a top priority on the transmission as well. Auto Start-Stop comes standard as another means of boosting fuel economy.
The only key figures we’re missing from the 2017 Raptor is the horsepower rating and MSRP. Looks like we’ll have to wait until a bit closer to launch for those figures though.
