Ever Considered A Fat Truck Just For Funsies?

Who among us hasn’t daydreamed about the prospect of owning a miniature tank? The possibility of possessing an unstoppable vehicle that can traverse all types of terrain in the most remote parts of the world is something that every man desires, whether he’ll admit it or not.

There’s the Howe & Howe Ripsaw. Powered by a 700-hp 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine and riding on tank tracks, it’s about the closest anyone can get to living the dream. However, Howe & Howe isn’t in the business of selling to the public, and good-condition used models can fetch upwards of $500,000 at auctions. There’s also the Ukrainian-built Sherp, which offers a civilian sales arm in the United States. These too can range in price from about $150,000 to upwards of $500,000. Thankfully, there’s another North American-based alternative, and it’s called the Fat Truck. The lifegoal isn’t as far out of reach as one might think, after all.

Fat Truck

A product of Quebec, Canada-based Zeal Motor, Inc., the Fat Truck is available in five different configurations, from the diminutive 2.4 Pickup to the massive 8×8 Wagon. The trucks are completely amphibious, meaning they can drive in any depth of water. The “smallest” tires stand 52 inches tall and 19 inches wide, run an inflation pressure from 0.5 psi to 6.0 psi, and can be fully inflated in just 15 seconds by the 150-cfm central air system.

A Fat Truck comes with a base cost of $128,000 and climbs as high as $148,000, depending on model and options.

Fat Truck 2.4 Pickup

The base Fat Truck 2.4 Pickup is powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder HATZ 3H50TICD diesel engine that produces 56 hp with 136 lb-ft of torque. The 4,200-pound vehicle has a top land speed of 20 mph, with a maximum water speed of 3.1 mph. The 2.4 Pickup can haul up to 2,000 pounds of payload and seats four passengers. It can traverse a 35-degree incline and manage a 22-degree sidehill. The Fat 2.4 Pickup is 129 inches long, 91.5 inches tall, 88 inches wide, and offers 20.6 inches of ground clearance.

Fat Truck 2.8 Pickup

The Fat Truck 2.8 Pickup is a slightly larger version of the 2.4 Pickup. This truck offers an open bed with seating for up to eight passengers. It can tow up to 3,500 pounds and offers a maximum payload rating of 2,200 pounds. It will do up to 25 mph on land and 3.1 mph on water. Powering the 2.8 Pickup is a 2.2-liter Caterpillar C2.2 four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 74 hp with 199 lb-ft of torque. The Fat 2.8 Pickup is 146.5 inches long, 103 inches tall, 100 inches wide, and weighs 4,960 pounds.

Fat Truck 2.8 Wagon

The Fat Truck 2.8 Wagon takes the 2.8 Pickup and encloses the rear passenger and cargo compartment. The vehicle shares many of the same specs with the 2.8 Pickup, including the 2.2-liter Caterpillar diesel engine, 3,500-pound towing capacity, and 2,200-pound payload capacity. It does get a bit heavier, however, tipping the scales at 5,440 pounds. As a result of the added heft, it loses two inches of overall height.

Fat Truck 8×8 Hauler

Built to excel in the toughest of terrains, the Fat Truck 8×8 Hauler is the company’s mightiest mover. The truck offers up to 5,000 pounds of payload capacity (1,000 pounds in the front car and 4,000 pounds in the rear) along with a 3,500-pound towing capacity. The 8×8 Hauler offers a 25-mph top speed on land along with a 3.1-mph speed on water. Powering the 8×8 Hauler is a four-cylinder 3.8-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine that produces 173 hp with 457 lb-ft of torque.

Fat Truck 8×8 Wagon

The Fat Truck 8×8 Wagon is the company’s largest vehicle. It offers the ability to seat up to 16 passengers with 4,000 pounds of payload capacity (1,000 pounds in the front car and 3,000 pounds in the rear). It can also tow up to 3,500 pounds. The 8×8 Wagon is powered by a 3.8-liter Cummins I-4 turbodiesel engine that produces 173 hp with 457 lb-ft of torque. Top speed on land is 25 mph while on water it’ll reach 3.1 mph.
