Imagine a gigantic vat filled to the brim with Monster Energy drink. Above said vat, a 1986 Toyota 4Runner hangs on a crane. Let your disbelief be suspended for a moment and ask yourself: what would happen if I dunked this bad boy in there?
Sure, it would come out coated in sugar, caffeine, and copious amounts of other “essential” ingredients potent enough to give cardiac arrest to a small horse. But in another universe, it would probably come out looking akin to this rock-crawling rig for sale in Fresno, California.
Motor mods? Ha! You’ve come to the wrong place, stranger. Under that spray-painted hood, you’ll find nothing but a rebuilt 22R-E four-banger, sporting little else than a new camshaft and cylinder head. The rest of the drivetrain is quite hardy, however.
Marlin clutch, Dana 70 rearend and ARB air locker, Dana 60 front end (both with 7.17:1 gear ratios), and a 2.28:1 transfer case featuring a doubler 4.7:1 rear case give this 4×4 more than enough low-end torque. Suspension comes from Trail Gear 5-inch leaf springs, while traction is provided by 39.5-inch Interco Iroks on all fours.
Other add-ons include a 50-inch LED light bar and four 4-inch LED lights, as well as a WARN Zeon winch rated at 10,000 pounds load capacity. The 130-amp alternator can handle its duty well, don’t you worry about that.
The seller claims to have invested over $25,000 in all these and other upgrades. “I am not saying it’s perfect, but it does its job,” he says in the description. “It’s reliable and has gone anywhere I have the guts to go. The body is really straight for a crawler.”
The asking price? Well, it says “$1” where the price normally shows up, and nowhere else does it say how much he really wants. As far as offers go, he only wants a “rock buggy.” Realistically, you’d be looking at a five-figure sum at the most. What do you think of this sweet little crawler?
