Volkswagens and off-road have had a rich history together for several decades. Dating back to the late 1960s and the onset of “Baja Bugs,” racers and enthusiasts alike were all too willing to get a taste of the action, much to the disdain of VW purists. Cutting up the body, slapping on fiberglass fenders, and tweaking the suspension components were all it took to make the “people’s car” a pint-sized contender.
That passion may have faded over time, but it hasn’t gone away completely just yet. In fact, it seems to have just taken a different shape–literally. Enter this curiosity from San Diego, a so-called “Boonie Bug” now for sale on Craigslist.
According to the description, the chassis is from a 1962 Bus and has a custom (no kidding!) body with poly foam. Supposedly, the inspiration was from an old 1970s issue of Popular Mechanics and was built by a some unnamed airplane mechanic, the grandson of whom sold it to the current seller.
Brace yourself, because you might not be able to handle these jaw-dropping specs: 1835cc Type 1 motor with single Weber carb and Compu-Fire ignition; reduction gear transmission; and fresh rear brake shoes, along with wheel cylinders.
The seller advises that you take care of the front brakes before too long, as well as investing in some new tires. He’s willing to trade for a VW Thing or Manx-type buggy, but otherwise will take $7,000 cash if you can pony it up.
So now if someone asks you, “What’s short, squat, and yellow all over?” you can beat him to the punch line by pulling up in this odd little Volkswagen. That is, if you’re willing to buy it–and you are, aren’t you?
