Unless you’ve been living under a cosmic rock this month, you have heard about the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. In 1969, Humankind put boots on the Moon for the very first time.
During the Space Race, The U.S.A. and other countries in the world, primarily the former U.S.S.R., all had a goal to get to space then to touch the Moon. As you likely know, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, two American astronauts, put the first footprints on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
The Apollo 11 Splashdown 50th Anniversary Celebration Week was held July 26 – 28, 2019 at the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum in Alameda, California. The USS Hornet, a US Navy aircraft carrier, hosted a consumer drive event on it’s flight deck.
During World War II, the iconic military Jeep supported troops on land, while the USS Hornet supported water and air-based efforts. While the Space Race was going on, the USS Hornet served as the Prime Recovery Ship for Apollo 11 and several other missions.
The legendary Jeep brand is right at home next to legends of the American space program. Consumers were able to drive the all-new Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Wrangler on a designated course that included incline/decline obstacles, off-camber ramps and setups designed the flex the vehicles out.
Jeep also set up various vehicles on display including a 1944 Willys MB and 1951 M38 Navy Jeep. Popular concepts Jeeps were also on display. For more information on the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum, please visit their website.
